Abstract

This article aims to investigate the use of writing as a cathartic tool, which enables the transformation of personal narratives through its regulares practice. The re-signification of memories through repeated narratives plays a fundamental role in the construction and reconstruction of individual and collective identities. The theoretical foundation of this study is based on the narrative studies of Labov (1972), Polkinghorne (1988), Mishler (1991; 2002), Järvinen (2004) and Santos (2022), as well as the theory of dialogism, as presented by Holquist (1990) from the Bakhtin Circle. The interrelationships between art, emotions, Aristotelian catharsis and narrative creation arising from writing practice are analyzed in the light of the theories of Spinoza (1667; 2009), Vigotsky (2001), Chauí (2002), Smyth & Nazarian (2007) and Faria, Dias & Camargo (2019). Veloso and Busarello (2018) highlight the importance of affect and emotions in academic research and their impact on social praxis, while Knowles, Wearing & Campos (2011) and Smyth & Nazarian (2007) offer definitions and discuss the effects of expressive writing. The analysis includes an interview with a writer during the process of creating a work of fiction, with the aim of investigating how writing practice contributes to mental and emotional balance, as well as to the construction and resignification of her personal narratives.
