This article addresses the reading of literary texts in the classroom with the objective of expanding the reader's criticality in relation to everyday themes. To this end, the short story "A carteira”, by Machado de Assis (1884), was used, whose choice is justified by its literary richness and social themes. The work was based on the theoretical framework on the short story in the classroom by Terra (2019), on the practices of the subject reader by Rouxel (2012), on the guidelines regarding the reading of the BNCC (2018), on the Bakhtinian conception of social subject, otherness and genres of discourse (2011). The methodology used is the didactic sequence according to Dolz, Noverraz and Schneuwly (2004), which was applied in two different public schools, one in Cariacica and the other in Serra, with students from the 8th grade of Elementary School II. In this context, it was possible to perceive a greater interest of the students in reading the text when it is approached from a perspective other than that of analyzing the form of composition of the genre, because the focus of this didactic sequence prioritized the aspects of construction of meanings of the text, from an interactional perspective.
