The article discusses the assessment approaches used to analyze university lecturers academic and scientific production, particularly from those who work in post-grad courses in Brazil. For that, two assessment paradigms are used: peer review and citations frequency in scientific data base, as well as classification procedure by quality of means of publication. Results reveal that quantitative assessment outnumber the traditional qualitative approach. It seems that quantitative analysis has been more frequently used nowadays. Such analysis has become more feasible due to easy access to data base and classification systems. The assessment processes trigger debates about how valid and adequate the chosen set of criteria used are. The debates involve those who are for and against quantitative procedures, and the latter argues that such criteria may not be suitable for humanities and social sciences.Downloads
