Abstract

This study intends to describe the pioneering experience of recognition of voice disorders related to work as a public health issue in Brazil. The initiative that made the state of Rio de Janeiro pioneer in the adoption of this practice was justified by the changes of labor relations that occurred since the 80s, where technological development, the change in the socio-cultural profile and globalization started to demand greater use of oral communication and consequently the use of voice in the working environments. In addition, we intend to report the experience of the speech therapy service of the State Reference Center of Occupational Health, over the past five years to the development of actions aimed at monitoring Hearing Loss and Speech Disorder related to work.
