Abstract

Theme: Promotion of health and the vocal knowledge of future professionals of voice. Objective: to investigate the knowledge of the student of Journalism about his own voice. Method: qualitative and quantitative research with 45 fourth-year graduate students of Journalism who were invited to produce a drawing and a written text about their own voices. The data collected from both sources were categorized into thematic groups. Results: the individuals produced a great variety of drawings using different objects and events in order to categorize, by analogy, what they knew about their own voice. With regards to the written text, they mentioned parameters of tonality, intensity, velocity of speech, articulation, modulation and resonance, as well as the social and emotional repercussions of the voice. Moreover, they valued or criticized some vocal aspect relating it to the future professional exercise. Conclusion: the individuals showed a diversified series of range knowledge about their own voice, especially that one related to the common sense. Therefore, it is assertable that the students analyzed are attent to the qualities of their voice and care about them, considering the students’ future as professionals of voice. The results emphasize the importance of the Speech and Language Pathology action on that particular population, focusing on the promotion of health and on the development of vocal potentiality and expressiveness.
