O texto analisa as mudanças do ensinar e aprender Matemática nos anos iniciais e expõem resultados de investigações que vêm sendo realizadas pelo Grupo de Pesquisa de História da Educação Matemática. Em especial, o trabalho centraliza suas atenções na Aritmética escolar, rubrica mais própria para designar a presença da matemática nos primeiros anos de ensino. O estudo adota como referencial teórico-metodológico a História Cultural, a partir de autores como Roger Chartier. O texto ainda considera as pesquisas no âmbito da história das disciplinas escolares, empreendidas por André Chervel e Thomas Popkewitz. A narrativa histórica sobre a Aritmética escolar desde o final do século XIX até os dias atuais permite problematizar e ressaltar a importância da história da educação matemática na formação de professores.The paper analyzes the changes of Mathematics teaching and learning in elementary school and presents the results of investigations that have been carried out by a group of researchers focused on mathematics education in historical perspective. The paper adopts asa theoretical and methodological studies on the Cultural History from authors such as Roger Chartier. The study also considers the research into the history of school subjects, undertaken by André Chervel and Thomas Popkewitz. The historical narrative about school arithmetic since the late nineteenth century to the present day emphasizes the importance of the history of mathematics education in teacher training.
