Abstract

The present article aims to problematize, from the outside, the conditions that allowed the entry into the order of Mathematical Modeling discourse of a statement that is becoming one of the almost unquestionable “truths” in this field: it is important to train critical and reflective individuals. The theoretical-methodological contributions are linked to the theorizations of the philosopher Michel Foucault. The analytical material includes theses, dissertations, and annals of the National Conference on Modeling in Mathematics Education.  The analysis of these materials showed that the emergence of the statement in question is intertwined with other discursive plots: political, economic, educational and cultural. We could conclude that Modeling would not only aim to teach mathematics, it would also become a space for the fabrication of subjectivities. It would also be a question of identity.
