Abstract In this paper, we provide a synthesis of investigations concerning the education of Mathematics teachers, highlighting the characteristics of the teacher’s knowledge and the principal derivations of this knowledge. The investigations were performed by two research groups of institutions located in the city of São Paulo. The objective of this paper is to revisit the contributions of national and international research studies into teacher education and correlate them with papers developed by these research groups. The papers analyze characteristics of the knowledge of the Mathematics teacher, focusing on knowledge of mathematical contents, on the didactic knowledge of the contents and on curricular knowledge. They also identify changes that were implemented in teacher education due to the new demands of the Brazilian educational system, and verify to what extent the initial and continuing education based on research and on practice thematization enables changes in the teachers’ practice. The papers find support in authors such as Schön, Ball, Marcelo, Shulman, Perrenoud, Tardif, Ponte, Serrazina, Fiorentini, among others. The conclusions of the investigations carried out by both research groups show challenges to the processes of initial and continuing education of mathematics teachers. They reveal that the teachers’ knowledge concerning the mathematical contents that are part of the curriculum of this subject in Primary and Secondary School, the didactics of this subject and research in the area is limited, and that there are misunderstandings about several topics and the way to teach them. They also show that there are improvements in the mathematics, didactic and curricular knowledge when teachers take part in education processes which enable reflections and relations between theory, practice and research, trying to articulate the three categories of teachers’ knowledge mentioned by Shulman.. Keywords: teacher’s knowledge; research on teacher education; teacher education to teach Mathematics
